Tabi　-足袋-

 
The prototype of tabi socks existed as early as the Nara period (710-794) and is said to have been based on footwear imported from China called shittozu (襪).

They were made by sewing cloth together and tying a string in front, and had no sole and no separate toes.

The outer footwear made from a single piece of deerskin used by the wealthy class was called "tanpi(単皮)," which is said to have been the origin of the word tabi (split-toed socks).

It is said that it was during the Heian period (794-1185) that people began to use tabi socks with soles and toes,
At that time, tabi socks were made of tanned leather, and because leather was highly durable, leather tabi socks were convenient footwear for battles and falconry.

Initially used by aristocrats and samurai families, Tabi Shoes changed over the course of history, and by the Azuchi-Momoyama period, Tabi Shoes came to be used by the general populace, regardless of gender.

Cotton tabi socks are said to have come into vogue due to the soaring price of leather after the great fire of Meireki 3 (1657).

 
足袋の原型は奈良時代には存在しており、「襪（しとうず）」と呼ばれる中国から伝わった履物が元になったと言われています。

布を縫い合わせヒモを前で縛るようなもので、底部分はなく、足の先も分かれていませんでした。

富裕階級が用いた鹿皮の一枚物から作られた外履きは、「単皮（タンピ）」と呼ばれ、足袋の語源になったと言われています。

底がつくられ足指のついた足袋を使うようになったのは平安時代とされ、
当時の足袋は皮革をなめして作られており、革は耐久性に優れているため、合戦や鷹狩にも革足袋は便利な履き物でした。

はじめは貴族や武家で使われていた足袋は、歴史と共に変遷していき、安土桃山時代には、男女に関わらず一般庶民の間でも使用するようになったと言います。

木綿足袋は、明暦３年（1657）の大火後の革の高騰により、木綿足袋が流行したと言われています。
